★ In 1984 in Rugby (Uk), Jason Pierce (aka J.Spaceman) and Peter Kember (aka Sonic Boom) just 18 years old, founded the cult band Spacemen3. Completely underprivileged but equally brilliant and talented, their success and undeniable appeal would inspire future generations of artists.

For a long period, the band was banned from performing in their hometown and elsewhere in England.

★ To the chronicles is the quarrel with the band’s manager Gerald Palmer, referred to by Jason as a “wallet-headed man,” at the top of the Space Age label, which, from 1990 to the present, has printed and reissued every of their recordings in his possession, more or less legally profiting from the band’s rights and even appropriating the legendary logo designed by the first bassist, Pete Bain.

★ In 1991 Jason Pierce, together with former Spacemen (except, of course, Kember), would start his musical project: the Spiritualized. Jason’s girlfriend also joined the group as a keyboardist, who became for him, for better or worse, an ‘inescapable source of inspiration.

We agreed at the beginning that there would never be a ‘this is my song, this is your song,’ which made what happened next even more shocking“. Pierce and Kember fought over writing credits, contributing to the band’s breakup.

Years later, on the love triangle, Ashcroft stated, “I was opening for his band (Spiritualized ed.) and I saw this girl jumping off the stage in those boots and that short skirt. I was like, ‘Wow! Who is that? She’s beautiful.’ And I was really lucky because she was also smart. That’s a nice bonus, I tell the guys out there! Think more about that aspect. I was very lucky. You should listen to her band, even though she doesn’t play there anymore. It was probably my fault!“.

Nel 1995 Richard Ashcroft, in gran segreto, sposò la fidanzata di Jason Pierce, circostanza che causò un gran clamore nel panorama musicale dell’epoca. ★ Sealing the emotional and spiritual affinity that characterized the two minds of the Spacemen3 is a decidedly curious fact: Jason and Peter were born on the same day of the same month of the same year (November 19, 1965) in the same hospital on the same town (Rugby).

★ Alan McGee, founder of the celebrated Creation Records, by his admission long courted the Spacemen3 to sign them to his label, but the young cosmonauts from Derby never succumbed to his flattery.

★ The betrayal by his girlfriend was heartbreaking for Jason, but at the same time, the inspiration for Spiritualized’s 1997 masterpiece album Ladies and Gentleman We Are Floating in The Space, in which references to the ex-girlfriend are numerous. The first voice heard on the title track Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in the Space is not his, but hers: Radley utters the words that make up the album’s title in an emotionless voice. The phrase is said to have been a “goodbye message” left on the answering machine for Pierce. In the same song, which is a sampling of Elvis’ famous Can’t Help Falling in Love, the frontman obsessively repeats the phrase, “all I want in life’s a little bit of love to take the pain away“.

★ The artistic output of first the Spacemen and then Spiritualized is linked by a constant reference to interspatial travel and the discovery of the galaxy. The metaphor that supersedes the interstellar theme is clear.
